Two distinct definitions exist:
- Any number involving the square root of -1. Typically used in numerically intensive, analytically oriented things like signal processing, control theory, and electromagnetism to assist in (for example) stability analysis, but also sometimes used just to make the math work out right (which was, in fact, the original application).
- Schedule dates and flow times based on “keeping the program sold”.
